From the Front Desk: No Squirreling Around Here
Greetings from the front desk at Wareing Sturgis Ford. Our dealership is easy to find, located just off I-90 at Sturgis Exit 32. It’s a beautiful dealership perched on a hill at the entrance of Vanocker Canyon, clearly visible from the interstate.
Visitors calling to confirm directions will often say, “Oh, it’s up on the hill with the big American flag.” And when they arrive, we often hear, “Wow, this is a nice dealership.”
There are, however, a few visitors who come and never say a thing. They wander our parking lot or zip through Service without a word.
Here are the stories of a few of them.
Who’s at Bat?
One day, as the technicians returned from lunch, they discovered a bat in the shop. This would probably never happen while the techs are working because it gets pretty noisy, but at lunch, to a bat, it must have looked like a lovely, quiet cave.
The bat swooped in and around the service bays, checking out its new home. Landon, our Lube Technician, said it decided to snuggle into the tire balancer housing.
That’s a cozy, dark place, but a very dangerous choice for a little tiny bat.
Of course, this wouldn’t work, so the techs put their heads together and decided to scoop their new neighbor into a box. It was then taken outside and returned to the safety of a tree.
Wranglers to the Rescue
One winter day, looking out from the front windows of the dealership, the Sales Department noticed a few cows had gotten out across the road. They were headed toward the railroad tracks.
Jaclyn, one of our Sales Consultants, formed a posse while General Manager Tim called the owner. She and the wranglers walked over, opened the gate and, under her steady direction, started making a wide circle.
At some point, she remembered how her family used range cake. Not having any range cake handy, she used a bag of frozen carrots from the employee fridge.
The story has it that she stood near the gate, beating on the bag of carrots while the posse closed the circle and the interested herd headed right to her. As the last one passed through the gate, she opened the bag and tossed in the carrots.
Chasing Chipmunks
This summer, again during a technician lunch break, a sneaky chipmunk decided to investigate things in the shop.
Well, this chipmunk was not aware of Shop Rule #1: Don’t Touch Anything.
Apparently, he was having the time of his life running up and down the shelves, knocking off all kinds of things. This is a big no-no, so our friend Chippy had to go.
Fortunately for him, he ran around and found his exit through the service bay door.
Birds and Broncos
Earlier this spring, we had a Bronco parked “on point” at the entrance of the dealership. The Bronco was backed up to the first light pole.
On several occasions when Sales brought it up for a test drive, they found the mounted spare tire soiled with bird poop. That Bronco was run through the wash several times before it sold.
It was kind of a mystery why the tire was soiled so often until one day when the receptionist was leaving. Driving by the Bronco, she saw a bird perched on the spare tire.
It had found its reflection in the rear window and was screaming at itself.
There must have been a nest in the light pole, and the bird was spending much of the day protecting it. The problem with the spare tire ended once we moved the Bronco.
Reynold to the Rescue
Some visitors are just passing through, winding their way through a parking lot full of vehicles. When Sales Consultant Reynold finds one, he always lends them a hand.
Turtles
We’ve seen him carrying little turtles and placing them in a little spot under a tree.
Birds
He’s carried a number of stunned birds to his “bird tree.”
And even a mud dog…
He found one wandering on the pavement and carried it to a moist spot in the shade.
Taking care of visitors—that’s what we do here at Wareing Sturgis Ford, no matter what their needs.
