Towing Safely in the Black Hills

July 1st, 2026 by

Hi, this is Marsha, the receptionist at Wareing Sturgis Ford.

As I pulled into the dealership this morning, a Ford Super Duty crossed in front of me towing a beautiful horse trailer. The family inside was headed toward Vanocker Canyon, and I found myself wondering what adventures they had planned for the holiday week.

One thing I couldn’t help but notice—there wasn’t a scratch on that trailer.

Summer is one of the best times to enjoy the Black Hills. Whether you’re hauling a camper, boat, horses, or side-by-side, getting there safely takes more than just a capable truck. It takes confidence behind the wheel.

That’s why I thought I’d visit today about some of Ford’s towing technology.

These features, available on specific towing packages, are designed to make hitching, backing, and towing easier for drivers of every experience level. They’re excellent tools—but like any technology, they work best when paired with an attentive driver.

Let’s Get the Trailer Hitched

Dynamic Hitch Assist provides on-screen guidance that helps align the hitch ball with your trailer using the backup camera system. It removes much of the guesswork from lining everything up.

Pro Trailer Hitch Assist goes a step further by using semi-autonomous steering to position the truck for hitching. The driver simply follows the on-screen prompts while the truck does much of the work.

Now Let’s Hit the Road

Smart Trailer Tow Connector keeps an eye on your trailer while you’re traveling, providing real-time alerts about trailer lights, battery status, and electrical connections.

BLIS® with Trailer Coverage expands Ford’s Blind Spot Information System to include the length of your trailer. After entering your trailer’s dimensions, the system helps monitor blind spots while driving, changing lanes, or backing up.

Backing Up Without the Stress

Pro Trailer Backup Assist may be one of the most impressive towing features Ford offers.

You can save profiles for up to ten different trailers. Simply select the trailer you’re towing, use the control knob to guide your direction, and the truck assists with the steering while backing into position.

For anyone who’s ever had an audience while trying to back a trailer into a campsite or boat ramp, that’s a pretty welcome feature.

Without question, hitching and backing are two of the trickiest parts of towing, and Ford has developed some remarkable technology to make both safer and less stressful.

The only unfortunate thing?

I often hear owners say, “I have those features… I’ve just never used them.”

That makes me wonder if they’re getting everything they paid for.

I do have one confession to make.

My own towing experience is fairly limited—but I did spend plenty of miles towing my kids in a bicycle trailer along the Mickelson Trail.

Thankfully, I never had to back that trailer into a campsite.

All of us here at Wareing Sturgis Ford wish you a safe and enjoyable summer in the Black Hills—or wherever your travels take you.

Stop by and tell us about your adventures. We’d also be happy to show you how these towing features work and help you find the Ford truck that’s ready for your next journey.

Thanks for reading.
